Beautiful story as always from Ruqaya’s Bookshelf!
This thoughtfully written, and beautifully illustrated book written by a talented young author, Majda invokes memories of home, belonging, migration and finding yourself. As the first book about Muslims set in Victoria,BC, this books breaks ground in representation and telling our stories. Wrapped around a simple plot of an athan competition at the local masjid, Majda manages to touch on several important issues: including self-confidence, navigating differences within the Muslim community and building connections. I hope a future sequel (or series!) for this age and older will explore some of the characters and plots Majda hints at, including Bilal’s siblings and parents, the king gardener, and dive into the dynamics of western Muslim communities in all their diversity and complexity. For now, this book is a wonderful read for younger children.
